WiserWiki (beta)

Announcement
We have recently made changes to our Terms & Conditions. Please read them carefully as they affect user policy. If you have further questions, please contact us at wiserwiki@elsevier.com.

Welcome to WiserWiki!

This website was originally started with content from the “Textbook of Primary Care Medicine” (3rd Edition) by John Noble – a leading figure in primary care medicine. It is evolving to become a key source of authoritative, online medical information.

Like most Wikis on the internet (such as Wikipedia), WiserWiki can be read by anyone who has internet access. However, unlike most Wikis, WiserWiki can only be edited by board certified doctors to ensure that the information is as trustworthy and reliable as possible. Doctors can also use WiserWiki as a valuable resource to collaborate with each other and to determine best practices by group consensus. We hope that you enjoy WiserWiki and find it useful.

As WiserWiki is currently in beta version, we are experimenting with various ways to make it a better site for you as a user. We hope that users will continually evolve the site to best suit their needs. Therefore, we welcome your feedback and suggestions! We have already received several helpful suggestions and are determining appropriate changes to make the site more user-friendly. We hope you will be patient with us during this beta phase. But please check back often as we work to add additional features and functionality.

Sincerely,

The WiserWiki Team

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is WiserWiki?

A: WiserWiki is a wiki that will allow accredited physicians to comment, collaborate and update medical information online and is viewable by everyone. The site was originally seeded with content from John Noble’s “Textbook of Primary Care Medicine” (3rd Edition).

Q: What is a Wiki?

A: For a good intro to what a Wiki is, please see this definition.

Q: What is the purpose of this site?

A: We hope to provide a trusted forum for physicians to collaborate and contribute professional-level medical content that can be viewable by everyone. WiserWiki is one example of our commitment to explore innovative tools to help medical professionals access the most up-to-date medical information available. As of now, the site is still in “Beta mode” as we test new ways to make it better for you as a user!

Q: I see that there are ads on this site. Where does the revenue from these ads go?

A: We do not currently expect to generate a significant amount of revenue on WiserWiki and hope to use the proceeds to recover the costs of operating and managing the site. The advertising is meant to be unobtrusive and of value to users who are interested in the content of the wiki.

Q: Why can’t everyone contribute to this site?

A: We restrict editorial privileges to board-certified professionals to ensure that the information is as accurate and trustworthy as possible. As we receive further feedback on the site, we may consider opening editorial privileges but need to do so in a way that maintains the integrity of the information. Please note that this information should not be relied upon for healthcare advice and is for informational purposes only.

Q: Do I still need to sign up to access the site?

A: No. You are only required to sign up for an account if you wish to have editorial privileges, otherwise the site is free to view for everyone.

Q: How accurate is the information on this site?

A: As WiserWiki is a collaborative project, it is up to the contributors to substantiate the accuracy of the information. Elsevier does not validate the accuracy of submissions. However, we hope to maintain a high level of relevancy and trustworthiness by ensuring that editorial privileges are restricted to medical professionals only. In addition, all edits to Wiserwiki can be viewed publicly in Recent Changes which displays the author and changes made. This allows users to evaluate recent updates and the reliability of content. Again, please remember that Wiserwiki is to be used for informational purposes only.

Q: As a physician, why should I contribute to this site?

A: We hope WiserWiki will provide exposure to physicians who wish to publish relevant, up-to-date and insightful medical content based on their personal experiences and expertise. As the use of online communities and the Internet has increased, the possibilities and benefits of sharing medical information and “best practices” to other patients and physicians are enormous.

Q: Does this site cost anything to access?

A: No. The site is free to users.

Q: Who holds the copyright to the information submitted on this site?

A: Contributors retain the copyright to information they contribute to WiserWiki. Please read our Terms & Conditions.

Q: I am a board certified physician who would like to become a contributor to this site. What do I need to do?

A: Great! Simply fill out our Registration Form and we'll validate you against the American Board of Medical Specialties database. Then you'll be ready to get started.

Q: I am a doctor, but I am not board certified in the US. Can I edit the Wiserwiki?

A: Yes. However, we may need to contact you with a request for additional information to validate your status as a physician.

Q: How do I edit a page?

A: Editorial guidelines can be found on the Editorial Guidelines page. Feel free to play with formatting in the Sandbox.

Q: How about some statistics?

A: Sure. Please go to our statistics page.

Q: What if I have other questions?

A: Please contact wiserwiki@elsevier.com.
